Very interesting retrospective of the life of prisoners that experienced the different stages of this prison. The history of the place is amazing from the early days, through WW11 when the air force took it over and all prisoners were released.
One of the most amazing points is this is totally free!
Very well worth a visit here. Not a large place however so much history to take in including the gallows. Photos, audio and volunteers combine to make this a must see.
The goal which was set in1883 till 1979. The place looks like a torture cell. Every part of building and artefacts tells the story of the torture of the prisoners. They were small crime like stealing or fighting for their land to murder of people who I think were trying to take over their land.
No human should be treated like this as they were in those days. If u enter the cell the doors were slim and I even couldn't get through. The torture cell were a square meter with no windows and they had prison for kids . Few places I felt the present of the spirit and astomoshere is very sad
Thanks for keeping this history and hope we don't repeat this torture of briatish rule
A very educational historic site.
Would recommend for the historian enthusiast or those that want to learn about the past of the land.
Bonus is that it's free entry and the clerk is well versed on historical areas and info
I wasn't expecting much but was pleasantly surprised by whole informative my visit was. Highly recommend the excellent quality tour app, it brought a whole new context to the gaol. Will definitely be back and bringing friends next time.
I highly recommend visiting here. I found the staff to be really nice too.
No fee but please bring some cash to make a donation. Also they have a cold drinking fountain which is a plus.
The history of the site is interesting so make sure you read the signs when you get here.
I really enjoyed wandering around.
Can easily fill up an hour or so soaking up the history.
The downloadable audio commentary is quite comprehensive, possibly too much so.
I felt there was too much to listen to, and each chapter didn’t necessarily exactly relate to where you were.
A 1-2 minute commentary on each building would have been more suited.
However it’s worth visiting.
Entry is free (donations accepted).
Today we visited the historical Fanny Bay Gaol. It is very interesting to see the different prison cells and learn about the hangings from the past.
